When are Irish politicians going to face up to the fluoride problem and stop fluoridation?
The latest scientific evidence comes from the far east, reported here.
The Japanese and Chinese know a thing or two about tea, and fluoride. Meanwhile, the Irish drink tea, and fluoride, no questions asked.Japanese researchers have studied and verified the presence of fluorine in tea beverages, saying prolonged consumption of the drinks could weaken bones.
Actually, there has been evidence around for a long time that tea can contain very high levels of fluoride. See this article, and this list of F content in foods and drinks. There is also evidence that the average fluoride content of tea has been going up significantly. This is attributed to the chemicals used in tea production and industrial pollution. Most agri-chemicals are high in fluoride.
Some basic research and simple arithmetic show that many Irish people are ingesting dangerous amounts of fluoride.
At least 40% of Irish children exhibit dental fluorosis, the first visible sign of fluoride poisoning. That excess fluoride intake is mainly due to water fluoridation. As the children grow up they get even more fluoride – from tea among other things.
Fluoridation is a public health problem, and the only one that can be solved overnight. Environment Minister John Gormley knows this. In early 2007, as chairman of the Oireachtas Health Committee, Gormley was responsible for the Committee's report on fluoridation, which was about to be published. Since the report was calling for an end to fluoridation, the fluoridators moved to stop it, and of course they found Fianna Fáil willing to help them out, with Committee member Dr Jimmy Devins acting as chief stopper.

If you drink tea, and value your health:
- Buy organic tea.
- Brew it with unfluoridated water.
- Add milk – it binds the fluoride so that less fluoride is absorbed by your body.
