I got my renewal notice today...618 euro...s0d that says me and I look around on the net...got the same cover for 328 euro....what a rip off!

Needless to say I just bought at the lower quote, didn't even try my old crowd...they can swing!

Apparently motorcar inflation is at 12.9% according to the CSO:

I'll just keep swapping every year...if it means I get a better price!

    Every time...

I used to go with Quinn for a couple of years, then abruptly I would get an off the wall renewal and I'd end up going elsewhere.

It happened with Royal & Sun recently and I got two letters from both companies (I having emailed both with a quote from an another company) and they offered to match the new quote. Funnily, I went with FBD as I think it incumbent upon insurers to know their market and I shouldn't have to inform them.

Going back 25 years ago I had my first car, an old escort which was worth about 1000 and insured it third party fire and theft for 500.

A year later I got a letter in the post (and bear in mind I had no claims, crashes or anything that would affect a quote) and the insurance company wanted 1100 for the next year. I couldn't afford it so sold the car. I did ring them and point out that the amount they wanted was absurd as I'd had no claims and having got through my first year without incident shouldn't that count for something? What proportion of the quote was related to a no-claims bonus?

The arrogant answer I got made me furious- 'an appropriate no-claims discount has been taken into account'. It was when I realised that insurance companies don't do calculations based on risk but on what they think the market will bear.

One of the many small personal incidents among many that made me realise I'd have to leave Ireland to get ahead at all. I was one of the few that had got a steady job from my school year. Sounds overly dramatic perhaps but it all adds up to a decision.

Be a little aware of the cheaper ones. Many are regulated in the UK instead of Ireland. You are essentially buying British car insurance. I don't know if that makes any real difference.

Is your new policy with Quinn? How confident are you of them surviving the year?
