The Catalpa Rescue tells the story of one of the greatest prison escapes in history. In 1876 a team of exiled Irish Fenians set out from the tiny whaling port town of New Bedford, Massachusetts to rescue six of their Fenian brothers from one of the most hostile and remote prisons on earth - Fremantle, Western Australia. A task which took nearly two years to accomplish and required the financial assistance of over 7,000 Irish Americans, to eventually pull off the greatest propaganda coup in Fenian history. It shows the extent of loyality the fenians had for one another.

An absolutely brilliant documentary of the Catalpa rescue. Well worth viewing.

It was on RTE1, I was out of the country at the time and scoured the net for it. Sometimes RTE can produce some absolute gems, this is one of them.

The Catalpa Rescue was mentioned on tonight's 'Coast Australia' programme (BBC2).

Presenter Neil Oliver asked whether the Fenian escapees may have been criminals rather than freedom fighters?

What a question for a Scot to ask!

Best of luck to Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP in the upcoming GE!

Some time back I read a biography of John Boyle O'Reilly, one of the escapees. The rescue certainly upset the British establishment big-time and O'Reilly went onto play a big part in Boston.
Agree, it has the makings of a great movie.
