    Default CF patients lied to..again

Surprise, surprise - the government has lied to cystic fibrosis patients again.

The promised isolation unit in St, Vincent's will now not become a reality until 2011
    at the earliest
A good friend of mine, who has CF, has been campaigning on this issue for years - even after the death of his sister, from the same disease.

This is another example of the disgusting nature of our government and health service. The senseless deaths of young Irish people mean nothing to them.

The lack of isolation facilities at the hospital for CF patients was condemned in a 2005 report by UK consultant Dr Ronnie Pollock. It said the lack of segregation and isolation for CF patients was dangerous and there was a risk patients who picked up infections would sue. It noted that Ireland has the highest incidence of CF of all European countries and there were “also strong indications that outcomes in Ireland are worse”.

Seems that bankers and politicians don't suffer from this disease! Finian MacGrath had this issue promised to him if he rowed in with FF. I wonder how you feel now Finnian?

    Disgusting government.

Looking after the vulnerable in our society indeed.

Also in today's IT, CF sufferer Orla Tinsley writes about the HSE decision here:

Trading people's lives for economic survival is sick and heartless - The Irish Times - Fri, Mar 27, 2009

Once again, some of the most vulnerable people in our society have been let down by the powers that be.

    Absolutely shameful.

Orla's article brigs it all home especially the part where she says that the HSE were not serious in their promise and that the sufferers should have seen it coming.

What claptrap will Harney come out with? And indeed who will be next on the list for let down?

Shameful is not a strong enough word for this. Disgusting would be more apt.

I was at a pub quiz in the Goose last Monday. Aaaanyway, what would you have us do? It's all very well moaning about the situation but how would you rectify the situation? (pls be aware that you're not an elected person and therefore you have no obligation to do anything other than moan.)

How low can this government actually go?

Only yesterday the papers were reporting the salary increases and bonuses for HSE officials. Today, we hear about that the building of the 30-bed CF Unit at Vincent's has been 'delayed'. A Unit that wil give those suffering and from an insidious but almost invisible illness the chance to live a better, longer life.

However, nobody should be surprised - this Unit has been in the pipeline since the early 1990's. Promise after promise to even begin construction has been broken again and again.

In addition to the 8-bed unit that opened last summer, a 6-bed unit was promised this year as a stopgap until the main unit was to open. Those extra 6 beds will not now be provided.

Funding for the Unit was promised and allegedly ringfenced. The economy may be in tatters and they will say the money is not there, but if the funds was set aside where is it now?

Other scandals aside for a moment, how many health scandals can a government survive?

I'd like to think this government can't sink any lower but sincerely doubt it.

Yes this is absolutely terrible, particularly given that Ireland has the highest prevalence of CF in the world.

    This is really very sad.
Life expectancy in the six counties is significantly higher I understand.
Think of all the money wasted in the HSE on overpaid consultants, persistent absentees retaining jobs, restricted practices, advisers, spin doctors, expenses etc
Shame on you Brendan Drumm, Harney and shame on all the vested interests in the HSE that have wasted so much money that the money for this cannot be found.
I believe that many people in the HSE are absolute Bas*ards

The HSE is a construction of the Harney/FF privatisation project, not the individual employees.

CF patients are being robbed of half their lives.

Murder would not be too strong a word for it.

Irish Medical Times | The Irish Medical Times Blog | Decision to postpone CF unit at St Vincent's should be reversed - CF Association

This all there is....we will have to depend on Joe on Monday to attempt to create enough stink about this....

    The HSE/DOHC are obscene!!!!
