    Default Bertie for President

saw an article about this during the week, and wondered what people thought. It made sense to me.

Bertie is leading FF to a third GE, and is in good shape to win it. This would raise him to the status of most successful post Civil war Taoiseach and FF leader. Rank him is one of the greats.

He has also stated that its his last GE, so he won't be going for four in a row.

    So where next for him.

    What about the Presidency ?

The job comes up in 2011 with Mc Aleese's two terms coming to an end, and will be close to the end of FF's term in government, should they be elected. It would give the next leader time to take over, and assert his (or her) control in readiness for the next election afterwards (2011 or 2012).

It would also get the FF election team out on the doors in readiness for the next election, and use popular Bertie one more time for FF.

And finally, it would mean Bertie would be the Taoiseach for 2016, giving him pride of place on the steps of the GPO on the centenary of the Rising.

    What do people think ?
1,197 people agree with me.. how many agree with you ?

Ahern has been asked about this umpteen times. And he has given the same answer, umpteen times, that he wouldn't be able to live with the constraints of the Presidency.

Ahern would only be 60 in 2011. Still a young age, and lots he could do outside of politics.

Plus he sees a career for himself in Europe at some stage (which is almost laughable...) but this could go up in smoke if FF get embroiled in the trouble brewing among the EU Parliament groupings
"The IRA Army Council have a history of telling the truth. If they say they didn't do it, then I believe them" - Bertie Ahern, speaking after the murder of Det. Garda Jerry McCabe

Yes... but then again, Mary Banotti would have beaten him.

If John Bruton ever holds any significant public office in this country I'm emigrating.

Bet he still gets a hard on when he thinks of Prince Charles.

I have one thing to say on this:

How about Bertie AND his makeup for President ? Like Bertie without his makeup isn't much of a package so we really ought ensure that we get the makeup as part of the package ...

That would save us €250,000 per year .... whereas

    plain vanilla Bertie + President = Pressie's salary + €250k ...
    "Yawn , am I alive yet ?"

No. There should be another woman in the Aras to make up for all the men.

Just abolish the ridiculous institution, it is powerless and meaningless.

With the exception of Robinson (I'm no fan) it is a retirement home for FF/FG politicians to earn a few bob.
