Default Back to School allowance and Christmas Bonus to be scrapped?

Ive heard from a friend that works in welfare, that there is talk about the Back to school allowance and Christmas bonus to be scrapped.

Clearly there are many more people who now would be entitled to these benefits, but would there be much public outrage if both these payments are scrapped?

Do people agree that they should be scrapped? And what about the implications of parents not being able to purchase school uniforms or provide for their families next Christmas?

They should be restricted to Irish Citizens only IMO.

Didn't you quit your job to live off the dole by choice?

So non-Irish citizens who happen to be temporarily out of work having paid taxes in this state should not be able to claim welfare upon falling on hard times?

In response to the OP, the back to school allowance is particularly important in the case of the long term unemployed and helps to break the cycle of generational unemployment.

If it came down to a toss up between the two, this allowance should be kept on for the above reason. Secondly it would cost the Department of Social Welfare less than the Christmas bonus.

Minister for Social Welfare is on record after the budget saying christmas bonus was definitely being kept. You or your friend are kite flying mate!

Well at the very least childrens allowance should only be paid to children who reside in the state.

I have NO problem with anybody recieving entitlements who reside and work in this state but to be paying for kiddies who don't live here is ridiculous.
When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute and it's longer than any hour. That's relativity.

Benefits like this need to be means tested. Child benefit the same.
