Thread: Ireland should join NATO

  1. #1

    Default Ireland should join NATO

With debates raging in almost all of Europe's neutral states about NATO membership, the future inclusions of Albania and FYROM in NATO, and Irish involvement in European defence, is it not about time that Ireland joined NATO, or at least had a grown-up debate about it?

    nope.

We don't have any enemies (Britain & France are our friends) so there's no point to
    us joining NATO.

i'm not afraid of debate at all but =sSome things are a little bit too stupid to argue about. (eg....
Is it time we started to debate human sacrifices to appease the global warming gods?)

We should not join NATO - what is the point?

More likely though that we will become more deeply involved in EU military affairs - it might not be quite so bad as some people make out but we should proceed with caution.

It's Croatia and Albania who are being offered to join BTW.

Can anyone explain what the function of NATO is anymore?

Well you can forget about a grownup debate in any case - NATO has assumed almost mythological demonic status among the left and the anti-American cast in Irish Society - Its got sacred cow status like this illusion that neutrality is actually enshrined in the constitution etc etc.

Well ,looking at it from a purely strategic real politik point of view:

Is there any need for us to join NATO?

AFAICS there would appear to be 2 reasons for the massive influx of new members into NATO over the past Decade - Russia and the USA.

If you are looking over the garden fence at the Russia and going on their past record of invading your garden and taking de facto control of it over the past 60 years - it would be completely understandable that you might wish to join one of the 2 local residents association - NATO or the EU - ideology simply does not come into it - its purely about protection from a threat -real or imagined - and the way Russia has started throwing shapes and throwing its weight about under Putin has reawakened old fears.

Ireland on the other land - does not come in an asses roar of this - we are so far away for this issue to be neglegible - so I dont see the point in joining up.

The other big reason for joining NATO is good relations with the USA - again we are already have a relationship with the US that is envy of most of the world without the need for a formal military alliance - so once again why would we go to the bother of doing so.

In Fact our Non-aligned status within the EU is very useful to all concerned - we're the cute hoers supreme and this lack of a formal position on anything gives us the flexibility to move quickly to whatever position suits us and our interests - for a small nation that is invaluable and why should we tie ourselves down in joining an organization that we really have no need, militarily, economically and politically ,to join?

    my 2 cents
