FF sat with much the same kind of eurosceptical group before they joined ALDE:

Union for Europe of the Nations (UEN) was a national–conservative and Eurosceptic political group of the European Parliament active between 1999 and 2009.

UEN was formed on 20 July 1999 for the 5th European Parliament, supplanting the earlier Union for Europe. Its member parties Fianna Fáil (FF) and the National Alliance (AN) were the driving forces behind the group, despite their being alone in the group in their support for the proposed European Constitution. Gianfranco Fini, leader of AN, was a member of the Convention which drafted the Constitution, while Bertie Ahern, leader of FF, negotiated the treaty as President of the European Council in 2004.
While FF are pretty broad-church, they're also actually a nationalist and conservative party.

So he is now in with such characters as:

    Ulster Unionist Party
    Britain's Tory party
Latvia's For Fatherland and Freedom party
    The far-right Danish People's Party

    Lovely...

This is ridiculous. Crowley is an ardent pro-European and has been for twenty years. To join a Eurosceptic group like the ECR is absolutely bizarre, although FF's decision to join ALDE in the first place was also bizarre.

What it really does is highlight the difficulty for FF in being identical to FG - their natural home should be the EPP, but FG got there first.

Excellent move by Crowley. ALDE took a huge hammering in May and are now spectators in Brussels. ECR is the leading Eurosceptic group. Hopefully this shows the direction that FF will go and it certainly distinguishes FF from FG who are basically just nodding donkeys in Brussels.
Thank you for the six thousand likes.
