Default Solicitor bids to prosecute McCanns

A solicitor attempted to launch a private prosecution against the parents of Madeleine McCann today on grounds of alleged child neglect.

Anthony Bennett faxed an application for a court summons of Gerry and Kate McCann to magistrates in the couple’s home county of Leicestershire this morning.

He comes across as an attention seeker. He previously did this to Michael Barrymore about drugs being in his house the night of that accident. In any case, the McCanns have broken no laws so he obviously knows he can't be succussful.

Rightly so, their behaviour was appalling. Had the McCann's been a bricky and a hair dresser or, worse still, on the dole; the tabloid press would have crucified them for leaving their children alone to go to the pub. A normal couple would have their children taken into care for doing that in any sane society.

Why under UK law when they were in Portugal? Can that even be done?

Otherwise, whatever the rights or wrongs of prosecuting them, the guy doing it sounds like a self-publicising, busy-body twat.

While the person who is trying to re-ignite his terminally flagging political career can be dismissed as an opportunist the Mc Canns do have questions to answer re their behaviour on the night.

Yes it can. The Childrens and young persons act in England and Wales covers those children whose normal residence is in england or wales even if they are temporarily out of the country. They deserve to be investigated by social services in any case. What they did may not be a criminal act but it bloody well should be.

Most sensible parents do NOT leave their children unattended while they go to a bar though do they?
