Default Irishwoman appointed US ambassador to the United Nations

A hearty congratulations to Samantha Power on being appointed American ambassador to the UN. She'll be a strong voice for human rights at the United Nations and has proven credentials in this field as well as extremism and foreign policy. She's a credit to her native country and will be a huge asset to the Obama administration in her new role.

Kerry got the big wedding in 2008 ...

Irish-American academic and writer Samantha (38) arrived for her marriage to the 54-year-old law professor at the church in the parish of Caherdaniel, the home turf of 19th century politician, the Liberator Daniel O'Connell.

The couple met while working on the Obama presidential campaign.

Ms Power arrived on the button of 4.30pm in a champagne coloured Lexus car bedecked with silk roses and hydrangeas driven by her uncle, Garry Horgan, from Cork.

Waiting a respectable five minutes until she got the nod from parish priest Fr Fergal Ryan, Ms Power in her cream all-lace dress and veil resplendent against her red hair, entered the church on the arm of her step-father Edmund Bourke.

One good consequence of Ms Power's birthplace is the fact Gilmore won't get a chance to present her with one of his "Certificate's of Irish Heritage".

She said she was a monster. HRC would probably take it as a compliment.

OK - politically she gets on my pips...

But congratulations to her - esp to any person of Irish background to do so well

BTW she was treated disgracefully by that journalist when she was clearly speaking off the record...

If Samantha Power were to enter the Rose of Tralee competition she'd probably win. That's how well she's done.
