Default Nigerian "jail the gays" law

The EU should pressure Nigeria over this. The legislation has passed the legislature by voice vote and now goes to President Goodluck Jonathan to sign. His office could not be reached for comment according to "The Guardian".

Not only does the law outlaw homosexual acts, but also public direct and indirect displays of homosexual affections, with up to 14 years in prison.

It was claimed recently on this forum that €600 million in remittances is sent to Nigeria each year. Collectively the EU and the US could exert massive pressure on the government not to sign this into law.

Associated Press= ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Lawmakers in Nigeria passed a bill Thursday banning gay marriage and outlawing anyone from forming organizations supporting gay rights, setting prison terms of up to 14 years for offenders......Other additions to the bill include making it illegal to register gay clubs or organizations, as well as criminalizing the "public show of same-sex amorous relationships directly or indirectly." Those who violate those laws would face 10-year imprisonment as well.
The law also imposes up to 10 years imprisonment for witnessing a gay marriage.

The poisonous role of American Evangelicals in promoting gaybaiting in the Third World is to be condemned.

I would say asylum for LGBT Nigerians but authorities lack the ability to distinguish between genuine and chancers in a timely manner and without being offensive.

Pity the EU doesn't bring in something similar.
At some point the gloves must come off and we face our adversaries.
    We're all Rhodesians now.

We had Africa day recently and we were told to celebrate Africa as it was a wondeful place and that any association with Africa could only "enrich" us, this seems at odds with this.

Hard to really influence Nigerian policy though. They have oil so they don't care about much what others think, and there is no way this issue would endanger most trade deals. On top of that, we are also far too politically correct to label them and their crazy measure as being retrogressive, primitive, and the product of a culturally backward dump. So I struggle to see what can be done.

You for a start, why else would you post the above?
Let's all raise a glass of frog milk to the ancient festival of Fargaltide!
