UUP fury overThe UUP has called for the immediate withdrawal of a teaching guide exploring the hunger strikes, which party leader Mike Nesbitt says is “utterly, despicably one-sided”.
Party leader Mr Nesbitt told the Assembly yesterday that he wanted the teaching guide, which accompanies the novel Bog Child, removed from the curriculum. It is aimed at 11-14 year-olds.
“How dare the Department of Education ask pupils to put themselves in the shoes of hunger strikers!” he said
It seems Nesbitt and the UUP are determined to censor history and distort the learning of children in the six counties.
Whether some unionists like it or not, prison represents a significant part of the history of the northern conflict.
You cannot be expected to understand or learn about it, if you’re forbidden from putting yourself in another’s shoes.
