Default Ruairi Quinn: child benefit is a "holiday fund"

Looks like Ruairi Quinn has shot himself in the foot by saying that child benefit was a "holiday fund" for some families. I'm sure he'll claim he was taken out of context but this could cause more friction between the Labour leadership and grassroots. Comments like this are more what you'd expect from the UKIP than Labour.

He speaks the truth, and I'm not so sure that even the hard left would disagree with what he said

'Mr Quinn yesterday acknowledged that many people depend on child benefit to pay for necessities'. Non story being puffed up by the Indo perchancehaps?

    He's wrong there.

The missus and I always used it to buy some good wines from O'Brien's monthly wine sale. Then, if we had any loose change left, we'd buy some coke and crisps for the kids. It wouldn't be right to be selfish, now would it?

If Ruairi is right why then do Dunnes Stores & Tesco frequently promote products like nappies and so forth on the first Tuesday of each month?
