Thread: New Bishop of Kerry to be installed

Default New Bishop of Kerry to be installed

After the retirement of Bishop Bill Murphy on age grounds, the Vatican has announced that his replacement will be Fr. Ray Browne, a native of Athlone and currently ministering in Roscommon. Are any of our Midlands posters familiar with him, and how theologically liberal/conservative he is in general?
    My political compass:

Unless you are "playing the long game" *, does it matter at the priest / bishop level?

Is there any scope at that level for one's theological orthodoxy / liberalism to have ANY impact?

*potential Red hat candidate, sent off to Rome...

Does it really matter, do that many people care, for the most part bishops, popes and priests and what they think or do are totally irrelevant to most people that is unless they caught doing something human like...............

Personally I find the closure of the Brogue Inn to be of more interest and relevance!

I have nothing but the highest level of contempt for the Vatican, and much of Catholicism. However, Priests and Bishops in Pastoral roles ARE at the coalface of society, and can make a difference. Most are utterly decent people doing a very difficult job.

The self destruction of the Church's moral authority HAS left a vacuum in Irish society, and there are no signs that we are equipped to find our own way. hence my question, what influence (albeit localised) CAN this appointment make? and the Op's question regarding this guy's "Form"

TD's are largely imposed, we have the illusion that we actually "choose" them. Bishops do have influence, and are either going to rehabilitate the church or continue to alienate the populations in their catchment (as opposed to their actual "Flock")
