Default Garda Shot in North Inner City - Breaking News

A garda has been shot in an incident on North Strand Road in Dublin's north inner city.

He was shot in the stomach and has been taken to hospital.

The incident happened at around 9.10am this morning.

AdvertisementIt is understood the garda was shot when he stopped a car in the area.

The officer is a member of a regional traffic unit and was on duty on a motorcycle at the time.

It is not yet known how many people were in the car but it was subsequently abandoned and gardaí have since recovered the vehicle.

The area has been sealed off and gardaí have set up a check point at the Eastlink Bridge

The latest news is that the Garda's injuries are not thought to be life threatening. Luckily ( a rather perverse word to use in this context) the weapon used was a shotgun, which is unusual these days, rather than a semi-automatic or automatic weapon which would have been much more likely to be fatal.

First thoughts should be with the Garda involved and his family and with the Gardai in general at the moment.

I hope they can and will find those responsible speedily.

Feckin barstewards! I hope the armed unit catch up with them and give them a taste of their own medicine.

Best wishes to the Garda and his family.

Paul Williams was on Pat Kenny radio, they say the car was stopped near the north strand post office, possibly , and probely likely, on the way to do an armed robbery.

I dont think it is related to the lusk case at all, the lads who shot the garda were probely coked out of their heads.

I have two uncles who are both garda seargents, one in limerick city, the other in dublins inner city. The stories that i have heard would make you wonder why anyone would even consider becoming a garda. Bricks thrown at squad cars, the broken poles from sign posts driven through widescreens, people running at gardai with carving knifes, cars been driven at speed directly at gardai.

the garda siochanna are saints (majority anyway). People have lost the respect and fear that the gardai once held.
Its like de ja vu all over again

Too right, unless he was an eyewitness to the events (and even then most people wouldn't believe him' his musings are irrelevant.

BTW the willingness of criminals to attack Gardai in such ways doesn't bode well for the future.

He was a Traffic Corps bike cop. It would be extremely uncomfortable to try and wear a vest under leathers. Also, as the weapon used is believed to be a shotgun at point blank range, a vest wouldn't have been much use.

I do feel that there needs to be more armed Garda out there - especially Traffic Corps.

The problem with giving guards guns is that they shoot people with them.
