    Default Switzerland restricts EU immigration

Switzerland is to restrict immigration from the EU. This is an interesting move and the EUnuchs are upset. Switzerland apparently signed up to the EU freedom of movement agreement.

How dare Switzerland act like a sovereign State. It would never be tolerated in the EU I can tell you!

    This raises several questions.

    1. The UK Eurosceptics like to compare the status of a non-EU UK to Switzerland. The fact that CH is using this freedom to restrict immigration even from neighbouring countries will be an eye-opener.

    2. Switzerland hosts many international organisations including UN and sporting (e.g. FIFA and even our own Pat Hickey, cycling). Have these organisations obtained an exemption for their own staff and dependents (presumably they have) and does that mean therefore that hosting these organisations is a way for Switzerland to pick and choose which furriners it hosts, and should these organisations in turn have qualms about this?

    3. It shows that professional gambler JP McManus made his greatest bet of all in moving there before the gates came down.

Switzerland is not a part of the EU and so can decide its own immigration policy. Even within the context of EU law, the immigration regime of Ireland is needlessly liberal.

Switzerland, the Kerry of Europe. Why does the EU tolerate these xenophobes? I've always felt the benefits the Swiss have obtained from Europe without putting anything in themselves, such as contributing to the EU budget, were extremely unfair. They should either be fully in, or not at all. No country should cherry pick the best bits of European integration. The same should also be said to Britain. In or out, no in between.

Similarities end at extracting benefit from EU/Ireland. But it makes a point. Plastic paddy tourism versus high-tech pharma and a "3 Wise Monkeys" approach to banking.

So, will there be an EU regulation in retaliation to restrict Swiss citizens living and working in EU Member States?

Switzerland can't expect to reap the benefits of EU policies while refusing to bear similar burdens.

Rubbish. It's arguably the most democratic European state - and that is saying something. It also happens to be one of the richest states.
