Default #VINB Mon 15/4/2013: Marriage equality

Gay rights campaigners have hailed a “major milestone” on the journey to full equality as the Government considers a recommendation to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples. Conservative and Catholic groups said the Constitutional Convention’s recommendation was expected but the result of any referendum on the issue would be far less certain.

Some 79% of members of the 100 strong think-tank voted to recommend that the Constitution be amended; while 19% voted against. The issue will now be debated in the Oireachtas and the Government has four months to say how it will act on the recommendation.

Colm O’Gorman of Amnesty Ireland told the convention it is time for gay parents to be treated as equals.
“I am a man who is married to a man and I have children. I love my children and my children love me and what I look for more than anything else from this republic, from my republic, is that we be treated with respect and with regard, and celebrated on an equal footing with every other parent and family,”
However, Breda McDonald of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference said it is “impossible” to talk of equality between heterosexual marriage and same-sex marriage because only the union of a man and woman can give rise to a child.

So what will Vinny’s panel think of all this? A good discussion is on the cards for tonight’s show …
Also on tonight's show: the Boston bombs and the abortion legislation.

Not more gay talk. Sick to the hole of it. Nothing against gays, but boring. I find lesbians more interesting, but in a bizarre way!

    Great op norm.

No interest in the topic but Marc Coleman will be an interesting guest.

Think a smaller but just as angry John McGurk who'll start a row in an
    empty house.
I believe that children are the future

    Unless we stop them now.

Haven't noticed you around, Otto, for some time. Glad to see you're out of the closet for the show ...

I went to a "letting on" Gay marriage oh, must be 14 or so years ago now. I told my mother about my two friends' (let's just call them Adam and Paul) upcoming marriage waiting for an explosion. She bought them a vase and got them a mass card, wishing them a very happy marriage.

Extraordinary woman the mammy. Never judged. Just accepted.
