Default Large Gardens not to be assessed for Property Tax

Some clause for concern as Enda digs in over tax - The Irish Times - Wed, Mar 06, 2013

Miriam Lord's piece on Property Tax in today's IT reports that:
Here’s the clause: “ ‘residential property’ means any building or structure which is in use as, or is suitable for use as, a dwelling and includes any shed, outhouse, garage or other building or structure and any yard, garden or other land, appurtenant to or usually enjoyed with that building, save that so much of any such yard, garden or other land that exceeds one acre shall not be taken into account for the purposes of this definition.”
Sounds like successful lobbying by owners of large properties...

    Contemptible.

Surely a house with a big sized garden sells for more because of the extra land? FG party of the rich and champagne socialists !

Yeah, all the citizens with large gardens formed a lobby group, we had protest march's and flags and stuff. Did you miss it?

Rightly so. Gardens add to the environment and tot ax them would be to penalise keen gardeners. If they were assessed you'd see them disappear and that would be a pity.

By your reckoning the whole farm should be subject to a property tax, clearly a nonsensical proposal!

    An acre!

I'm sure there's not many suburban gardens approaching anything like an acre.

Out the country, possibly, for Saoirse's pony, maybe...

Do you realise how many houses you could fit on an acre, sure that's a smallholding.....

All taxes should be based on current income.
