Default Gaza marathon canceled over Hamas ban on women paticipants

A look ahead to what a future Palestinian state would look like. People complain about Israel's so called 'apartheid', but quickly look the other way when Gazan elected government does the same. What future for Gaza if this is what its become.

BBC News - Gaza marathon: UN cancels race over Hamas ban on women

The UN agency which organises Gaza's marathon has cancelled the event, blaming the refusal of the territory's governing Islamist Hamas movement to allow women to run.

Hamas said the marathon could go ahead if "local traditions" were respected.

"We regret this decision to cancel the marathon but we don't want men and women running together," Abdessalam Siyyam, cabinet secretary of the Hamas government, told AFP news agency.

"We did not tell Unrwa to cancel the marathon and we haven't prevented it, but we laid down some conditions: We don't want women and men mixing in the same place," he added.

In the past there have been attacks on the UN's summer camps for children in Gaza after complaints that boys were allowed to mix with girls, the BBC's Jon Donnison reports.

The marathon was due to be part of the UN's fundraising efforts in order to run those camps, our correspondent adds.
In August 2012 Hamas MP and Deputy Speaker Ahmad Bahr appeared on Hamas' Al-Aqsa TV and demanded all Muslims to annihilate the Jews.

jaysus, trying to run in that heat with a burka would be a health and safety issue. Also there would be a high chance of men entering the race as women in burkas. sensible decision all round

Why is the fear of woman such a common thread across religions?

Yeah, would need the identity police out to check under the burka's. Shame Christians wont be allowed to take part as the Hamas fanatics would complain also. They want to turn it into another Saudi Arabia whilst cheered along by Irish lefties.

Yep, of course the attempt to try to generalize to "all" religions. All religions ban women's participation in sport. Apart from the Towelheads name another?

    Wrong!

The marathon was cancelled to allow for a gay pride march to go ahead.
