Evening Echo — Cork councillor in court on drink-driving charge
A bit of everything in this Court report by Mary Smithwick.
"Garda Killian Barry told the court he and Garda Shay Lyons were operating a checkpoint in Ballymacoda in East Cork’s main street at 12.35am as the car approached. It stopped, then suddenly turned left away from the checkpoint about 50 metres away. There was a screech of tyres as the car drove off and the gardaí went in pursuit in the patrol car.
After making a number of turns, the car entered the car park of the local church and entered onto the grass area. Garda Barry said a male got out of the car and began to run.
He said he shouted at the male to stop but he failed to do so. Garda Barry said he gave chase for close to 150 metres. The man turned into a garden of a derelict house and hid in a bush. The man identified himself as Michael Hegarty and said he was a public representative. He told Garda Barry he had consumed a “few drinks” on the night, including two in the local greyhound track and two whiskies in a local bar. He told gardaí he had been stupid to drive after agreeing to bring a friend home."
Adjourned to consider the legal submissions, and resumes on the Ides of March.
