    Default What effect would extraterrestrial contact have on mankind?

    An incredibly hypothetical question, of course. Considering that there is no known evidence of any contact with extraterrestrials there is doubt over whether they even exist, at least in our neck of the woods. But presuming that we do one day, probably through radio, come across signals that we can be definite are extraterrestrial? Face to face contact itself would be difficult, of course, but what would be the ramifications of such a discovery? What effects would it have on our cultures, on our politics, on our religions, and more importantly, on how we view each other and our place in the Universe. Or would their be any sort of impact whatsoever?

    In my opinion it would profoundly affect our view of ourselves, particularly in terms of philosophy. Many religions place emphasis on the importance of humanity, and if an intelligent species from beyond Earth is discovered (one that is probably far more advanced and intelligent than us), I believe religions will have to make huge changes and/or possibly rebrand themselves altogether. In terms of our culture (hence why I put this thread in the Culture section) I believe it would be very humbling for us, and our views of ourselves and the Universe would change massively.

    What are your thoughts?

    I have no doubt, no doubt at all, that Christians and Muslims would be screaming that aliens were mentioned in the Bible and the Qur'an. Some Muslims make the claim that the internet was predicted in the Qur'an.

    never been to roscommon then? despite the best efforts of many counties around them to help they continue on their merry way. I suspect that man would be the same post an alien intelligence visiting

    If they successfully logged on here as their first form of contact:

    Myself and Cruimh would ask them about their cooking technology;
    Gerhard and TFM would furiously deny that there was any problem with Catholicism and would subtly try to determine whether they had gay marriage on their planet;
    Blokesbloke would spam them with photos of a certain former Presidential candidate;
    Cato would ask them what their particular cradle of civilisation was:
    GatsbyGirl20 would remind them in perfectly-formed sentences of how vital education was to a planet:
    Tommy O'Brien would send them a wall of text explaining every single political system on Earth and how the media interacts with them:
    The rest would complain about Pravda, Seanie, Bond-holders, and Anglo-Irish.
    Oh, and FFers.

    The Alien4Fun account would be left dormant with just one post and a couple of random Likes.

    And maybe an infraction from the mods for not starting the thread in the "Chat" forum.

    You don't have to look past Genesis, there's an odd sentence about Sons of God taking daughters of man as wives. Also, one of them Old Testamony prophets describes cherubim or something with a wagon-like vehicle thingy. Can't remember which one.

    My question is, how long would it be before someone tried to make porn with them.

    We in South Kerry would ask them whether the spaceship driver was bound by terrestrial drink driving legislation.
