Default British Army murder of unarmed nationalist unjustified.

The HET has found that the British Army murder of prominent republican Joe McCann was unjustified.

The report found that McCann was unarmed when he was shot and that 'Joe's actions did not amount to the level of specific threat which could have justified the soldiers opening fire in accordance with the Army Rules of Engagement or their standard operating procedures'

Source: Army killing of IRA man 'unjustified' - UTV Live News

This murder happened just weeks after the British Army’s rampage in Derry, which culminated in the deaths of 14 innocent nationalists.

It is good that Joe’s family can have justice. However, there are many more families out there who do not. Much of the British Army’s terror and destruction in Ireland has been swept under the carpet.

I think this case highlights the need for an independent truth commission to examine the deaths caused by all combatant forces.

It also found the RUC didn't investigate the criminal act of the BA properly either. Holding the line indeed.

Virtually every victim of the Republican terrorist groups were 'unarmed' when they were killed. Joe McCann was a leader of one of those Republican terror groups.

    No sympathy from this quarter.

The overwhelming majority of the IRA’s casualties were members of the colonial forces, they were certainly not unarmed.

    Let sleeping dogs lie?

    A fair point, perhaps?

But then that would allow the erroneous discourse of the Troubles to go on unchallenged.

The British state, their agencies and institutions, were the main protagonist force in this conflict, and their role must be examined.

"their role mus be examined" - Just the British state's role?
"main protagonist" - That may be your view, please bare in mind that others living within NI look back on the troubles from an entirely different perspective and see the "main protagonists" now in government in NI.
