Default Celia Larkin's appointment--Cronyism or what!!

THE Government was accused of “political cronyism” last night following the confirmation that the Taoiseach’s former partner Celia Larkin will be appointed to the interim board of a new powerful State consumer agency.

Ms Larkin is the nominee of Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's department to the new National Consumer Agency's interim board. Her appointment will be confirmed officially later this week by Enterprise, Trade and Employment Minister Mícheál Martin.

The revelation also sparked outrage among independent consumer groups who have been denied a place on the board.

Ms Larkin runs two beauty salons in Dublin.

She was Mr Ahern's partner for 16 years until their relationship broke up two years ago.

Wonder what TKWhiskers will think of all this - presumably he'll figure that the potential Rainbow is in tatters as a result....
"So how are things at the Campaign for the Freedom of Information, by the way?" "Sorry, I can't talk about that"

Yep - this political masterstroke has us quaking.

Seriously though - and with no disrespect to Ms Larkin - how can this appointment be justified? I suppose Ahern will just brazen it out, I very much doubt that we'll hear him on air explaining the wisdom of his appointment.

Yes, and they will be in bright, refreshing multi-coloured and colour-coordinated tatters. And all at a very competitive price. Because, y'know, fashion consultancy for stinking-rich women is such a cutting-edge and competitive business.

Some of us might send our ex the odd Christmas card or something. Bertie just pops them onto a state board. It's the thought that counts, I suppose - and both can be done by your departmental secretary. Sure why put the Consumers Association of Ireland onto the National Consumer Agency when they do such a grand job on their own?

    Sometimes isn't enough.

Two quotes from the article stand out for me.

"Celia Larkin was picked for this board for her ability, experience and skill and it is standard practice for the Department of the Taoiseach to make nominations to all State boards," she said.

"ability, experience and skill" at what exactly? running a business? Hardly, for the benefit of the consumer, or is she a great one for car auctions and spotting a bargain banger?

"She also rejected claims there was no independent consumer representative on the interim board. "There are two women, Gillian Kelly and Marie Barry, who are consumers on the board and represent the ordinary person," Mr Martin's spokeswoman added."

How are they consumers more than other people on the board? Do the other members of the board have 'people' to shop for them? Or are they the only other women on the board and sure we all know that it's the women what do the shopping.

Honestly, this is one of the most blatant pieces of cronyism in years. Of course, if she is asked to stand aside she might just have to make do with a gold watch instead

If that's to be believed - then the choice of a beautician over a consumer advocate speaks volumes about the government's priorities - a real case of style over substance.

    "Ability, experience and skill".

It should be noted that Celia Larkin's company (Beauty at Blue Door Ltd.) ran up serious financial losses for the year ended 2003.
One less-than-flattering business correspondent suggested her sliding business was due to her outrageously high prices!

And now she's been appointed to protect Consumers by Bertie, because of her "previous experience"......

    Should we even be shocked?!
"The IRA Army Council have a history of telling the truth. If they say they didn't do it, then I believe them" - Bertie Ahern, speaking after the murder of Det. Garda Jerry McCabe

Have any Fianna Failer's posted here yet? I know they're online as shaneholden has been posting elsewhere. Well lads - care to respond to this enlightened appointment or are you as incredulous as the rest of us?

But people! She's been in VIP magazine! That qualifies her for any job on the planet! She's so purdy!
