Paul Anthony McDermott, Barrister, Journalist Paul Anthony McDermott: We

Alan Shatter, Minister for Justice, announced his intention to revisit a Privacy Bill first published in 2006, but which has been allowed to languish. This was around the time of the publication of topless photographs of a Kate Middleton. However, the Bill fails to deal with many other important aspects of privacy.

Irish law already contains strong protections of privacy. To take one example, the Irish courts have held that the publication by a local newspaper of a photograph of a GAA player whose shorts suffered a wardrobe malfunction constituted an invasion of his privacy. Social media have also come in for attack in recent months.

So where do we stand now in relation to privacy and the law, and more importantly, what’s likely to be on the cards in the future? Good strong panel tonight to discuss this issue.
