Default Paedophilia isn't a disease per se,rather instead akin to normal sexuality - what should be done about this ?

Here's an interesting, in depth article on paedophilia :
Many researchers taking a different view of pedophilia - latimes.com

The best estimates are that between 1% and 5% of men are pedophiles, meaning that they have a dominant attraction to prepubescent children.
    ...
Other pedophiles are "good people who are struggling," said Dr. Fred Berlin, a psychiatrist who heads the Johns Hopkins Sexual Behaviors Consultation Unit. "They're tortured souls fighting like heck not to do this. We do virtually nothing in terms of reaching out to these folks. We drive it underground."
    It argues that
    1. Paedophilia isn't a disease, instead a sexuality just like say heterosexuality
    2. Many paedophiles never act out on their impulses

    And suggests solutions:
In an attempt to change that, sex researchers in Germany launched an unusual media campaign in 2005.

"You are not guilty because of your sexual desire, but you are responsible for your sexual behavior," said billboards urging them to contact the Institute of Sexology and Sexual Medicine in Berlin. "There is help! Don't become an offender!"

More than 1,700 men have responded to the print, television and online ads for Project Dunkelfeld literally "dark field." As of August, 80 had completed a one-year program aimed at teaching them to control their impulses. Some received hormone shots.

Should we change our view of paedophilia in effort to better support non offenders ? This could include

    • making computer generated porn legal (it is currently illegal)
    • support programmes such as the above
    • etc

What is it with you and perverted threads?

How anyone in this day and age who needs to be held by the hand and told why paedophila is wrong needs help themselves.

cYp, you are a smart guy, you should be better than this.

Starting provocative but disingenous threads just to shock and entice out extremes is lazy, intellectually cheap and narcissistic.

    Please stop.

If it was akin to normal sexual behaviour hormone therapy wouldn't be advocated as a countermeasure.

I'm serious- yes it is a provocative issue - but a serious one. If the offence rates could be reduced that would be a good thing ?

Your opening remarks are really a matter of definition - disease or sexual orientation. The former would in this context be a disorder of function, the latter a gender preference. Based on that it is a disease - but definitions can change. But I don't see the classification issue - disease or orientation - as being particularly important to the rest of your OP.

    1. Apologistic definitions of the syndrome do not help.
    2. Hormone treatment is legally difficult.
    3. Any intervention that accepts a "normalised" view of paedophilia is extremely problematic.
