Default Small countries are best for quality of life

The Economist Intelligence Unit has made a study ranking countries for best quality of life. Small countries seem to do best.

The most striking finding is that the USA has slipped to 16th position. In the 80s USA still had the best quality of life. Ireland does quite well at 12th position though this may slip as continued austerity bites Ireland.

Britain is at 27th position. Interestingly former Communist countries seem to have gone backwards. A study done in 1988 showed the USSR at 21st position. Now Russia languishes at 72nd position.

I love the criteria they used for the 80's survey

    Economist readers per capita

    Yawn Index - Canada and Belgium= 1pt, HK= 12pt, Ireland 3pts

Philistine factor - Italy/US/France 12pts, Denmark, Australia, NZ UAE 2pts

    And best of all...

And the a bonus point allocation so they could just skew it whatever way they wanted without excuse.

It's worth noting that a significant number of those countries are reliant on either a lot of natural resources or liberal financial laws relative to surrounding countries.

these surveys are kinda dumb, so someone from Finglas can say to someone in Hampstead in London "in your face!" ? Btw surprised there wasnt an entry for D4 , might have made top 10

    Hmmm,

Shouldn't we be comparing said small countries with equally small, or more accurately less populous, sub-regions.

I imagine there are dozens of regions in the US with populations of 4 millions that would tears strips off Ireland in terms of quality of life.

A good news story on P.ie... Are you mad???

Did you not hear that Ireland is a grubby little country? How dare you be upbeat about anything.
You'll never go broke appealing to the lowest common denominator.

    Not particularly surprising.
