The UK Universities Minister is proposing that for the purposes of entry to third level colleges, white, working class males be treated as a disadvantaged minority. In an exclusive interview with The Independent newspaper, David Willetts has pointed to the dramatic slump in UCAS (like our CAO) applications from men.
Under the proposed plans, white, working-class boys would be included as a target group for recruitment in university access agreements; these are agreements that universities have to sign to gain permission to charge higher fees. Failure to deliver on their access agreements would mean that the universities could face particular sanctions.
Girls have been out-performing boys for some time now and the educational performance of young males – particularly those from white working classes – has worried Ofsted (the UK education standards body) for more than a decade. Working class males have been accused in one report of concentrating more on the three Fs (fighting, football and f***ing) than the three Rs.
If white, working class males are under-represented in third level, then it's hard to argue with the logic of this - that is if one is generally in favour of these affirmative action initiatives. Or perhaps this is just populist grandstanding from an overly ambitious Tory? What sayeth the Politics.ie nation?
