Default Was Airey Neave set up to be assassinated?

Interesting snippet I saw in yesterday's Independent. It says Enoch Powell believed that Airey Neave the conservative MP, was killed as a result of a leak of information from the Northern Ireland office to the INLA. Powell believed Neave, if in office, would pursue a very pro-Unionist line and this info was communicated to the INLA with the hope they would target him. It's a scanty bit of speculation but interesting given that the view was held by Enoch Powell. Neave would have become Secretary of State for NI had he lived. A 1982 security report on policing described An Garda Siochana as a "technically unsophisticated" force which was under-resourced and intensely sensitive to any perceived criticism from outside.
Not much change since then so.

Powell was like a more intelligent version of Paisley, whipping up fear about the Barbarians at the gate. Hard to tell if what he claimed was true.
INLA murder of Neave strengthened Thatcher's resolve as she was close to him.

A car bomb is a crude way to kill someone who was "set up". After all, he would only have to look under his car to establish that he had an issue.

If the only 'evidence' for this claim was the paranoid imagination of Enoch Powell, I wouldn't give it much credence

Enoch Powell might have information, but he never disclosed it. Extraordinary claims needs extraordinary evidence, of whatever the phrase is put. There seems to be no evidence for this far out claim.

Would the INLA at the time have had the ability to conduct an operation like that without outside assistance?

Check out "The Dirty War" by Martin Dillon. The INLA had some serious operators at the time. And there was nothing too sophisticated about the mercury tilt switch.

Usual inane unimformed comments about a serious topic.
Neave was the organiser of the attempted coup (The Wilson Plot).
The bomb appears to have been planted within Palace of Westminster car park.
    By The INLA?....highly unlikely.
The INLA leadership were then wiped out leaving no witnesses.

Powell was an extremely intelligent, well-educated, and often perceptive man. But he was also capable of being spectacularly wrong and stupid.
