Thread: The Italian Politics Thread

  1. #1

    Default The Italian Politics Thread

Might be useful to keep a running thread active here on the ever-shifting faultlines in the Italian party system, now that their general election is fast-approaching. Since Monti assumed power in November 2011, the People of Freedom has torn its apart over the future of Berlusconi - first he appointed Angelino Alfano as his anointed successor, before swiftly retracting his endorsement. Now, it appears Silvio is set to formly splinter the party, by announcing the reformation of Forza Italia, with his opponents remaining in the PdL. The centre-left Democratic Party, however, is far from celebrating, as it fears the popularity of Beppe Grillo's "none-of-the-above" Five Star Movement would deprive it of an overall majority. Whatever the result, the fractious nature of Italian politics looks set to continue.

Good thread, as the sum total of my knowledge of Italian politics is from the movie Il Divo and the Economist's article on Berlusconi "The Man who screwed a Nation".

Even without Berlusconi, we're now up to 11 parties possibly entering parliament:

    The Left:

Democratic Party (formerly the Socialists, for the most part)
Left, Ecology, Freedom (partly green, to the left of the DP)
Federation of the Left (rebranded Communists)

    The Centre:

    Christian Democrats (formally called UDC)
    Italy of Values (anti-corruption liberals)
Future and Freedom (vehicle for Gianfranco Fini, a Berlusconi rival)
Towards the Third Republic (vehicle for Monti)
Five Star Movement (possibly left, but no ideological position)

    The Right

    People of Freedom
    Northern League
The Right (eurosceptics, former Libertas members)
    My political compass:
    Economic Left/Right: -5.38
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.64

Pier Luigi Bersani remains favourite to become the next Prime Minister after winning yesterday's Democratic Party primary, defeating the Mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi, 61-39%.

The PdL has abstained from a confidence vote in the Monti government, and Berlusconi is reportedly been pressed to "return to the field".
