Default Gay men sue counselors who promised to make them straight.

I saw this on a Tweet from CNN earlier today and found the article disturbing.

Gay men sue counselors who promised to make them straight - CNN.com

Basically the article is about a lawsuit brought by young men who paid for counselling to change them from gay to straight. I have heard about this "therapy" but I had assumed that it was a "pray the gay away" strategy. This was for Jewish men and so there was some religious aspect to it.

Before Sheldon Bruck told his orthodox Jewish parents he was gay, the teenager looked for a way out of homosexuality. His search led him to JONAH -- Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing -- which claimed on its website to help people "struggling with unwanted same-sex sexual attractions."

That said, these so called counselors were something bordering on psychological terrorists and I am sure the men needed real counseling after these sessions.

.....told Bruck in the summer of 2009, the lawsuit said. JONAH counselor Thaddeus Heffner blamed Bruck's gay orientation "on Bruck for not working hard enough to change, on his father for being too distant, and on his mother for being too close to him," the suit said.
"On one occasion, Downing instructed Unger to beat an effigy of his mother with a tennis racket, as though killing her, and encouraged Unger to scream at his mother while beating her effigy," the suit said.
They were preying on vulnerable young people and their misguided parents who probably felt they were helping their children. The article also notes that a California law bans this practice on people under 18 but it really should be banned outright and banned everywhere.

the suicide rate among elderly gay men and LGBT teenagers is astonishing.

I agree, good for him, ex gay therapy is nothing but hokum its homophobia pretending to be science (and dangerous to the health of anybody who used it) and often has an extreme right wing religious angle to it!!!

All these guys should be sued til there put out of business!!!

They covered this issue quite brilliantly, over a couple of series of the LA cop show the Shield.

    Here some releated good news

Rep. Jackie Speier To Introduce House Resolution Against "Ex-Gay Quackery"

In response to tragic examples of the harmful psychological abuse inflicted on young people through dangerous sexual orientation conversion practices, also known as reparative therapy to convert or “repair” an individual’s sexual orientation, Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) will introduce the Stop Harming Our Kids (SHOK) resolution on Wednesday, November 28. At a 10:00 a.m. press conference, she will discuss the resolution and her efforts to investigate whether taxpayer funds have been used to reimburse therapists for this discredited and ineffective practice through the federal Medicaid or TRICARE healthcare programs. Congresswoman Speier will be joined at the press conference by advocacy leaders and survivors of psychological abuse from sexual orientation change practices. Sheldon Bruck, a plaintiff in a new lawsuit against a New Jersey organization for offering fraudulent conversion therapy services, will share his story.

Should we ban bone setters or homeopathy or prayers for the sick or self-help books too? If people are stupid and gullible to be taken in by b*llsh*t and part with their money and their sanity its their own problem.

I thought most of these "services" claimed that they only help people control the urges not actually convert people.

It has a very damaging effect on their mental health. The suicide rate in these cases is extremely high.
