A Waterside resident's bungalow was hit eight times with gunfire in the Jeffrey Avenue area of the Waterside last night. The man, his partner and child were in the bungalow at the time, he spotted the perpetrators fleeing on a motorcycle.

A man who did not want to be identified said: “We were in bed at the time. Just after 12am we heard these shots being fired through the window. There were eight shots fired at the window. This is a quiet area, you wouldn’t normally see anything like this. I think it was sectarian.”

A PSNI spokeswoman said that all lines of inquiry remained open, after they found the motorcycle burned out nearby. DUP councillor Drew Thompson described those behind the attack as “clowns”, adding: “I would condemn any attack like this, irrespective of where they are coming from or what the idea is behind it''.

This comes on the back of the good work done in the area by Gary McClean a reconciliation worker who uses sport to encourage young Protestants and Catholics from the city to reject sectarianism and racism, he says there are ‘real and present dangers associated with unchallenged attitudes and behavior.’ McClean is Project Officer of the RESPECT initiative has been working with fifteen sports clubs across the Derry City Council to make them aware of the dangers of sectarianism.
