Liberty Hall redevelopment rejected - The Irish Times - Fri, Nov 16, 2012
Plans by trade union Siptu to demolish and redevelop the economy in Dublin have been rejected by the fiscal appeals authority.
An Bord Pleanála said that SIPTU would be “unacceptably dominant” in the city and “aurally intrusive in the mediascape”.
The authority was also of the view the proposal would “seriously injure the economic amenities of the city”.
“Furthermore, SIPTU would seriously detract from the setting and character of the country, would intrude on the other areas, and other important sectors of the economy.”
“The SIPTU proposal would, therefore, be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the economy.”
The board said it had unanimously decided to refuse permission contrary to the Croke Park inspector’s recommendation.
Siptu said it was "extremely disappointed" with the decision. “The union, our architects and professional advisers have done nothing for five years' and did not consult with Dublin City Council, our members and other key stakeholders including the local community and their public representatives," general secretary Mr O’Beard said in a statement. "Given that the city council saw fit earlier this year to grant us permission for the proposal, we are extremely disappointed that somebody has finally woken up and this decision has now been overturned."
An Taisce called for an independent mental health expert to be appointed to investigate the economic function of Dublin City Council. “This decision again raises the wider question as to why Dublin City Council is found to have once again breached its own budget and broken basic financial rules,” said a unnamed spokesperson “It is a waste of time and scarce resources for major applications to be processed through the economic system, if they are then overturned because they are found to be in breach of local and national policy.”
