Should Car Radios be banned? Study shows Sports on Car Radio on par with Drunk Driving!
A Study by the UK's Transport Research Authority, has found that Drivers listening to sports, on the radio while driving can be as dangerous as Drunk Driving.
Great progress has been made in Ireland, in reducing road deaths over the last decade. This study indicates that there is further scope for improvement of road safety in Ireland. Drivers are being distracted from giving their full attention to driving, while listening to the radio while driving.
Obviously some programming will cause more distraction than other programing as drivers are increasingly stimulated, by programme content.
The Study found that Drivers engaged most with sports broadcasting. It would be unreasonable to ban radio sports broadcasts but the obvious solution seems to be to remove radios from cars.
The drive time market is a major market for advertisers, as many people only listen to radio while they drive.
The UK study found that radio listeners could have their reaction times increased by up to 20%. It also found that, the number of incidents of hard breaking at the last minute almost doubled when motorists were listening to sports commentary.
And the report noted: "This suggests that the motorists were not paying enough attention to the road and had to make a late decision to respond to the conditions and drivers on the road around them."
A simple device that interrupts use of the radio while the car is moving would provide a solution!
