Default Ireland Elected to UN Human Rights Council

Here's something to be somewhat cheerful about.

Ireland won a seat at the UNHRC for the first time today. We won one of the three seats available to 'The West' along with the US and ze Germans.

Now that we have dealt to a certain extent with our own human rights abuses of the past, maybe we can offer the world our own perspective in overcoming them. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what moves we will make in relation to Palestine.

The council was created by the UN General Assembly in 2006 as the main human rights body of the UN.
It is made up of 47 elected member states and meets in three regular sessions throughout the year.

Does this mean we'll prevent planes that are suspected of carrying 'rendered' kidnapees from landing in Shannon or is it just for show?

Good news, another chance for Ireland to show excellence at an international level.

What are the human rights issues at home?
    1) Ignoring our own Supreme Court on X (and the ECHR by extension)
    2) Failure to recognise transgendered perople
    3) Prison conditions, slopping out etc
    4) Detention of children in St Pats
    5) Some of the treatment of those in mental health institutions
    6) Low life expectancy of travellers and 85% unemployment
    7) Treatment of immigrants?
    8) Inequality in recognition of opposite-sex and same-sex couples by the State??
    9) Garda abuses???
    10) Rendition flights?

    Anything else?

    What should be stressed abroad?

On number 6) Can you really blame the State for the lifestyles that travellers lead which contribute to their lower life expectancy? Especially as high levels of suicides amongst travellers brings down the age quite a bit.

    ..
Bleeding a country dry in order to serve foreign masters, and all that follows from that, must rate fairly high on the scale.

To be fair this one is not a human rights issue. Also the other members of the council include:

China, India, Uganda, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Jordan.

So clearly there is room for hypocrisy at the UN as always

If every other country jumped off a bridge would you expect Ireland to do the same? :P
