In a ceremony today in St. Anthony's Cathedral in Cairo, Bishop Tawadros was elected the spiritual leader of Egypt's 11 million Coptic Christians. In the wake of the Muslim Brotherhood's victory in the recent elections, there are calls by Copts for the new pope to take on a lower profile role than his predecessor, Pope Shenouda III.
The ceremony is quite surreal. A blindfolded boy picks out the winner out of a hat like something out of the draw for the FAI Cup.
