Default Lib Dems call for Scottish 'Home Rule'

Home rule is back, this time in Scotland. The Scottish Lib Dems have called for home rule, not just for Scotland, but for England as well. Presumably they would want home rule for all four "nations" of the UK, with their talk of UK federalism. Of course the UK political system is far to conservative and unwieldy to allow for such radical reforms. The best the Lib Dems can hope for is enhanced powers for the three puppet parliaments/assemblies under English authority.

The problem with uk federalism is that 80% of the uk is England. The logical solution would be to break England into a number of self governing states. And tony Blair had a go, but the public didn't buy it.

UK Constitution and Political system is very flexible and forms the basis of half the countries in the world's political systems including dear old Eire.

The uk has also been talking about federalism since the 1830s. I have a book from 1890 that argues that federalism is the solution to the Irish question. They don't do systemic change in the uk.

They do whatever it takes and adapt to circumstances. No referenda nonsense except in extreme circs.

Yep. The UK gov has understandably been cool on the idea of an English parliament, mainly because Westminster is de facto the English Parliament. If England were to get its own parliament it would spell the end of the UK. England would take over in terms of influence in the exact same way the Russian parliament took over from the central Soviet government in 1991 once it acquired some power.

Lib Dems, Labour, and Conservatives have all considered devolving more powers to Edinburgh. The main powers would be fiscal.
