Minister Quinn has started a new process to look at the possible transfer of some schools run by the Catholic Church to other school patron bodies in 44 areas around the country. This process will be undertaken initially on a pilot basis in the following areas: Arklow, Castlebar, Whitehall (including Kilmore West and Beaumont), Trim and Tramore.
The first five communities will be surveyed to determine the preference of parents for Patronage of National Schools. It is not yet known what percentage of demand for divested patronage will trigger patronage being divested.
For example if the threshold trigger was set at 25% and 23% sought patronage to be divested this would leave 100% of Catholic parents accommodated and 100% of others with a different prederence not accommodated.
School Boards of Catholic Schools are writing to Parents to urge all those who are happy with the status quo to make their views known in the survey. "We urge you to participate in the Survey, as often those who are happy with the status quo remain silent."
The Survey invites parents of Children attending primary as well as parents of preschool Children to express their views on their preferred patron in order of preference.
