Default Is the Irish voting system flawed?

Is the Irish voting system flawed?

I give you this example of Galway East.

    1st Pref votes

    Kitt - FF - 6604

    CONNAUGHTON - FG - 7264

    Cannon - FG - 6924

    KEAVENEY - LAB - 4261

    BRODERICK,- IND - 5146

    McGUGH - FG - 5833

    CANNEY - IND - 5567

    McCLEARN - FG - 5392

    http://www.rte.ie/news/election2011/...lway-east.html

TD`s for Galway East are Kitt, Connaughton, Cannon and Keaveney.

However Keaveney came last out of the top 8 in the first pref vote and yet takes the last seat from the 4 seats available. If this was a first past the vote election as in the UK Keaveney would not be a TD and it would be Mchugh. Its only in count 5 that Keaveney gains enough seats to rise above McHugh!

Surely our election system is flawed when someone can come last in the top 8 and yet be a TD?

If it was FPP they wouldn't have run a second candidate. It's not perfect but I think it's a better fit than any alternative.

Well it could be First past the post with who ever has a majoirty takes a seat.

In other words in the Galway East situation there are 4 seats available, who ever gets the top number of votes takes 1st seat, who ever gets the 2nd number of votes takes the 2nd seat etc.

I just think its a farce that someone who did not have the popular vote and didnt have it untill the 5th count can take a seat in the Dail.

Yeah, it is deeply flawed. In 2007 FF's Cyprian Brady received just 900 first preference votes and still won a seat for the Dail/

Yes but that did reflect an overall generally high vote for FF(particularly Berties high personal vote). I agree it's flawed but I've yet to see a system proposed that I think would work better.

Depending on your perspective everyone electoral system has flaws, it's a very subjective thing.

Ahem, where does one start with you....

    are you being serious?

    13.3% FP Lab vote.

Running mate Higgins eliminated 4th Count, with 4649 votes, 2452 transferred to Keavney.

You have heard of PRSTV in multi-seat constituencies have you not?

Its quite simple, you vote for who you want as a TD.

Who ever gets the most votes takes seat 1, who ever gets the 2nd takes seat 2 and so on.

    This vote 1,2,3,4,5 is pathetic.

As in the case of Galway east, a guy who DID NOT have the support of enough people to be the 1st pref is now a TD.

In other words a person who was the 8th most popular candidate lept ahead of the 4th.

    That is not democracy.

As for CS post, I am shocked, but again it prooves the point.

If we had FPTP, we'd have had single-party FF government non-stop since 1932.
