Default Foxconn City - The Future is Now

Longhua Science & Technology Park in China, otherwise known as Foxconn City, is the manufacturing base of Foxconn, the company that makes everything from the iPhone to the Nintendo WII.

Covering about 1.16 square miles (3 square km), it includes 15 factories, worker dormitories, a fire brigade, as well as a downtown complete with a grocery store, bank, restaurants, bookstore and hospital. Workers live, work and eat inside the complex, which broadcasts its own television network, Foxconn TV.

Approx. 450,000 people work in Foxconn city.

Meanwhile, back in Ireland, we pay people €8.65 per hour to operate a cash register in Tesco.

Not really sure what you are getting at? Do you want human battery farms or less pay for checkout staff?

They're serious about being in business. We're not.

I'm not expressing a preference. Just highlighting the reality of a globalised world and the fact that manufacturing in Ireland is the economic equivalent of the corncrake, unless we want to start paying 2,000 a pop for our iPhones.

Oh god what I would give to see employers bodies using this as an example when they are welcoming government initiatives while saying that they are lacking and calling for more as they seem to do when asked for any comment on anything.

We are in a recession. this is not an opportunity to forgo the rights of man in order to enthrone corporations and create some hybrid capitalist-Communist state taking the worst excesses of both systems. With the only goal being to increase production at the expense of all form of personal achievement or advancement.

One Foxconn here, One, would wipe out our entire unemployment problem. Yes, I think we have alot to learn from them. That is unless you like your neighbours being on the dole just so long as you're alright Jack.

Ledroit are you endorsing the communist way of life? You and cael should have a big red love in.
We can never compete with this and nor should we even try. If we want to make money we design the products these people have to make. Even evil overlord Le droit cannot expect Irish people to live in dorms and get paid Chinese salaries can he?

Not so sure if I would like them being slaves to a system, though I have to admit they already are albeit a lot better than the example!
