    Default "Medical Malls" The future of medicine in Ireland?

    I've just been watching a report on RTÉ about a new privateer hospital in Cork, and I was struck by the description given to it by its boss. He called it a low cost medical mall, where patients would be got in and out as quickly as possible. No sign of Hypocrates here - just neo-liberal profiteering. Is this not the extreme of the profiteering attitude that Maurice Nelligan warned us of? Where medicine is taken out of the hands of doctors and patients, and reduced to profiteers and their consumers? Is it not time for the Irish people to re-assert ourselves as human beings, and not docile victims of the profiteers?

    I wonder how long it will be before Mary Harney joins the boards of some of these private hospitals / malls

    I know the this site is populated by right wing extremists, but even you lot must see the harm in making medicine a private business for profit, run by accountants, not doctors.

    Medicine isn't run by doctors, it is run by the central planners in our socialist paradise, the HSE, for which we would gladly die.

    The problem with provision of medical services is not whether done not/for profit or public/private
    ...
    rather instead it is that the consumer is buying a product, about which they understand very little
    ...
    this means that the consumer just has to "trust the system"

    This isn't so much of a problem with simple medical services... rather instead the more complex ones

    Thus my contention is that for complex medical services a new paradigm is needed, instead of
    patient <--> doctor
    it should be
    patient <--> information intermediary <--> doctor

    Whereby the information intermediary would be responsible for recommending services

    To an extent brokers such as NICE in the UK fulfill this roll for public health... and private insurers fulfill it for private health ... but that is only to an extent, and the information intermediary has little true independence (they tend to be bound to the service providers)

    Thats quite an exaggeration. In most hospitals, senior medical staff will have a management capacity. A hospital run by people who have no medical ethics is an obscenity.
