Default Irish Owned cargo ship attacked by Pirates.

    ARDMORE SEAFARER

    Cyprus, October 13, 2010.

Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (Cyprus) Ltd., technical managers of the Product Tanker Ardmore Seafarer report that the vessel sustained a piracy attack yesterday, some 600 miles south west of India.

Bernhard Schulte is pleased to report the tanker is now back under control of the crew, all of whom are safe and accounted for.

The 45744 DWT tanker was on passage from Dar Es Salaam when a small craft came alongside and the crew took refuge in a citadel area on board where they remained for approximately 14 hours.

While there were reports of small arms fire during the attack, no casualties have been sustained and the crew emerged from the citadel once it had been confirmed that the pirates had abandoned the vessel.

The Ardmore Seafarer is now sailing under her own power and under full control of her crew.

The Ardmore Seafarer is a double hull, 2004 build, Product Tanker.

Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement: Press Release - Ardmore Seafarer

Possibly worth noting that Irish ship ownership is worth over €800m per year to our struggling economy. Irish owned ships are being attacked by pirates, yet we have no naval presence in protecting the ships(apart from a handful of advisors in the Hedquarters of the EU anti piracy operation.

I wouldn't be surprised if many here didn't even realise there was such a thing as an Irish owned ship.

I was going to make a crass pirate joke, but on reading the article it would not be appropriate.
Good news that all are unharmed.

Your link says nothing about Irish owners. Vesseltracker.com lists the ship as sailing under a Marshall Islands flag.

Yes we absolutely need to invest in a Arleigh Burke class destroyer. About $1.5 billion. Let's do it now. If we let it set sail tomorrow it'll be in India for about 2 weeks.
I'm living in America, and in America, you're on your own. America's not a country. It's just a business. Now f***ing pay me.

She is owned by Ardmore shipping, in Cork.
She is registered elsewhere, like many others.

Indeed, lets make a laugh and a joke about peoples lives being put at risk thanks to a "not my problem" attitude of the state.
We have idiots going to Gaza to give hamas a warm fuzzy feeling, what about looking after something that may actually benefit the states economy for a change?

Why is it under the flag of the Marshall Islands, exactly. Why should Irish defence forces defend such ships?

How much has Ardmore Shipping Limited contributed to the Irish economy, and how?
