Default INTERESTING- number of TD's and Senators who went to Guth na Gaeltachta Info Day

Guth na Gaeltachta and Conradh na Gaeilge organisted an Information Day in Buswells Hotel last Wednesday 6th October. They also organisted one last year. The events gave TD's and Senators the opportunity to come over to the hotel to support the Guth na Gaeltachta campaign and to stay abreast with developments nationally in relation to the Irish language and the Gaeltacht. They are lobbying TD's and Senators to show their support for 1) the opposition to the proposal that Udarás na Gaeltachta will end and be merged with Enterprise Ireland and 2) that Pat Carey implements all the 33 recommendations of the Joint-Oireachtas Committee on the first ever 20 Year National Strategy for the Irish Language.

82 politicians went over to the hotel to show their support for the campaign. Presumably many others support the campaign but were unable to attend. I know Rónan Mullen for example was in Brussels. Here is the list of TD's and Senators who attended.

A small number probably would on any given day. The room rented out was down stairs though so any TD's and Senators going to Buswells did not have to go to it.

Is this the Gaelgeoir equivalent of "sure he went to me uncle's funeral so I'll give him a preference," in other words, is there a point to any of this turning up? The thread is titled INTERESTING after all...

    Default Lá Eolais 2011

Guth na Gaeltachta and Conradh na Gaeilge will be holding their third Lá Eolais/Information Day on 1st June to keep Oireachtas members informed of news in relation to Údaras na Gaeltachta, Irish in the education sector and the 20 Year National Strategy for Irish. Some of the political parties policies in relation to the Irish language in the recent General Election will also be discussed in particular Fine Gael's commitment to look at a second Irish language subject being introduced to cater for native Irish speakers and other students with good Irish, Labour's policy for a second subject to be taught through Irish at primary level and both FG and LB's policy for trainee primary teachers to spend longer time in the Gaeltacht when learning to become teachers.

We cannot afford to fund the Irish language to the extent that we do at present.

Nothing summed up the toal madness that goes on in this country when, back in November, the IMF were holding their press conference in the Merrion Hotel and across the road Cowen and O'Cuiv were launching an Irish 20 year strategy.

Really I didn't know whether to laugh or cry!
