Default Will 2010 be Ireland's "annus horribilis"?

It started badly with some of the worst weather in decades. There has been a litany of bad news all year, from the various child abuse reports, continued shocking lack of leadership from the church/religious orders, the return of emigration, increased unemployment, bank bailouts and budget cutbacks. Then to cap it all, in case anyone thought that someone was leading the country through the crisis, we hear a rambling drunken/hungover interview that became one big international joke.

The country might have had a team to cheer in the summer's Word Cup but that too was cruelly denied.

I think 2011 will be worse with the arrival of the IMF.

2011 unfortunately is looking likely to be every bit as bad on the economic front.

Maybe 2010 will historically be accepted as the Rep of ireland's annus horribilis and a turning point but this will only occur if we have the gumption and good fortune to:
[i] Dump the gombeenism of FF
[ii] Accept that there is nothing special about this little country; for example we are not a nation whose intellect is somehow baised above international averages. So forget replacing all low skill jobs in manufacturing and having all of us working as PhD qualified researchers in the Smart Economy.
[iii] Identify our true opportunities and exploit them: eg. low energy quality food production, sustainable support for information intensive industries, produce high quality low cost potable water.

2010 will feel like a walk in the park before we get out the woods we are in....

2011 is gonna be real real bad....

But not as bad as 2012...

Which will probably look pretty good looking back from the end of 2013...

We will have turned so many corners by then that our heads will be in a spin...
