People might remember Supt Pat Doyle. A few years his solicitor contacted a woman who had been accused of stealing from his wife's shop, and asked her to pay 30,000 euro.

The woman complied, taking out a loan from the credit union to do so. The allegations of theft were then retracted by the shop's owner.

In most jurisdictions it would be considered unusual at best for a Garda to ask for money in connection with a criminal case, but not in Mayo, where despite many media reports, none of which disputed the payment, no action was taken against the Superintendent.

Just to be clear, he never disputed that he asked this woman for 30 grand and got it off her.

A high court judge said she found aspects of the case "disquieting", but found that there was no responsibility with the gardaí.

The poor woman, who was accused, arrested, strip searched and, she says, threatened, didn't get her money back, even though she was never found guilty of any offence. At least the court found that she was not liable for the legal costs of any other parties when she tried to sue.

So Supt. Pat Doyle was allowed to retire last year on full pension, and now works for Shell.

"Disquieting" is certainly one way of describing it.

    Sick. Just plain sick.

I pray to god that he will be held accountable for his actions. Either in this life or the next.

The facts are bad enough, and they are all in the public domain.

Yeah, it was a very well researched OP SC. Sorry for having to take it down a few times but as BvB mentioned some of the stuff was bats.

Because I disapprove, wrong word, depise Shell and it's seemingly unlimited power, does not mean that I think it correct to lambaste a former Garda for becoming a member of it's security staff. This is common practice in all big business. You want security staff, you go look for those who know what's what.

In an age where violence, street crime, home invasions, murders and anti-social behaviour appears to be increasing in increments with Fianna Fáil's scandals, we should also pay our dues to the men and women of the Garda Siochana who everyday face a side of society that we can only dread to imagine.

I want to thank the Castlebar cops who came out to investigate a robbery in my daughter's house where my grandson's xbox was stolen and who then returned, repaired the lock on the back door, and next day recovered stolen xbox and returned it to my heartbroken grandson.
