People might remember Supt Pat Doyle. A few years his solicitor contacted a woman who had been accused of stealing from his wife's shop, and asked her to pay 30,000 euro.
The woman complied, taking out a loan from the credit union to do so. The allegations of theft were then retracted by the shop's owner.
In most jurisdictions it would be considered unusual at best for a Garda to ask for money in connection with a criminal case, but not in Mayo, where despite many media reports, none of which disputed the payment, no action was taken against the Superintendent.
