Default FG parliamentary party meeting scanned for bugging devices

A frankly surreal glimpse into last night's Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting by Deaglan de Bradun in this mornings Irish Times.

There was a strong emphasis on confidentiality and a senior party source said the members were told that the room had been "scanned" for bugging devices before the meeting.

I saw this and really couldn't stop giggling towards the end. Whoever the source is clearly felt the meeting (and the direction of the party) was a farce and wanted to emphasise that by leaking it in such detail. The last sentence of the article is priceless.

    It is brilliant.....

There was some criticism at the meeting of the fact that comprehensive details of the critical discussion on the leadership issue last June were leaked to The Irish Times.

Senator Paschal Donohoe said he had come to the meeting to find out the party’s message on the economy but the whole time had been spent talking in silly and demoralising terms about the media.
Don't tell me he didn't know before hand?

Honestly though, this is farcical stuff. Bugging devices? In the Leinster House Parliamentary Party rooms? If it was Inda who asked that the room be swept for the bugs, as he no doubt would have called them, it's clear that he thinks this is a film, or something! Honestly! And who would want to bug the room? It would be leaked anyway as we clearly see! The only reason to bug it would be to hear the actual shots followed by "Feckin' hell, I hit me big toe this time! Someone get Dr. Brendan Grace."

Still, should give Gilmore a nice smile in the morning.

I'm actually left wondering who was tasked with the search, and did they know what a bugging device would even look like?

Probably Special Branch. They use something like the hand held metal detectors customs use.

He stressed the need for party confidentiality.
MEDIA COVERAGE of Fine Gael and its performance in the polls were key issues at a 90-minute meeting of the Fine Gael parliamentary party held behind closed doors at Leinster House last night.Sources at the meeting said party leader Enda Kenny was highly critical of some recent Sunday newspaper coverage that suggested his position was under threat.

And in other news, SETI has been contracted to search for signs of intelligent life in the Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting. A spokesman for SETI said that it expected to find signs of extraterrestrial life first. Enda Kenny replied with something that translated as "they are all against me" and ended with an indecipherable outburst that sounded like "yupmaeoyupmaeo".

Why on earth would anyone need to bug the meeting? Everyone knows the participants are going to leak everything anyway.
