Default HSE West cuts to be outlined today

The details of cost cutting measures planned by the HSE (Health Service Executive) to curb a huge budget overrun in the HSE West region will be outlined at a meeting in Galway later today.

SIPTU, which represents over 20,000 health care workers in the region, says cuts which have already been made are bringing services to the verge of collapse.

Emergency departments ‘struggle’ with staff levels

HOSPITAL emergency departments are struggling to cope with serious staff shortages, resulting in some shifts being left uncovered and causing havoc to existing quality and safety standards.
Advocacy group the Irish Association of Emergency Medicine (IAEM) has warned that some emergency departments are struggling to cope with staff levels up to 80% below what is needed.

It will be interesting today if certain TDs decide now to withdraw their support for the government.

Hse has admitted to having 3,000 staff who 'do not know what their jobs are'.
How many of these are in the Western region?
If this issue was dealt with the savings could be chanelled back into frontline services.

Well there is the plan. How that is to save €49 million remains to be seen.

Under the plan, the working hours of the temporary staff would be cut by 7,000 hours per week, the replacement of student nurses would be curtailed and overtime payments and travel allowances would be significantly reduced.
