Default What if Bertie had stepped down sooner?

Along with all the Cowen bashing, I note that there is also a lot of Bertie bashing. I do think that the downturn had finished any chance Bertie may have had of a future career in Irish politics as President, Dublin Mayor, EU Commission job etc.

What would Berties legacy be if he had stepped down in 2004 and taken a job at the EU commission? He was reportedly one of the contenders for the top job.

Would people be pining for the return of Bertie and the good ole days and blaming the current FF government? Would history be kinder to him and his administrations?

No way was Ahern a contender for the top job in the EU, this spin was driven by his own PR people, through their little meetings with the likes of Blair's "people" they would agree to praise each other and enhance intl rep like through the NI process, do not forget he was a glorified car-park attendent in the Mater.

Mahon Report is still due out in first half of New Year and it will be absolutely damning of the Great Pretender, may or may not lead to criminal charges, defo if it was in the US and the UK.

Nobody realistically will be pining for Ahern, rather they will be more concerned, businesswise, to see how much they got away with and make sure it cannot be taken from them, many of these are very close to Ahern.

Ahern did not have an Administration, he ran his own form of dictatorship, without guns, but designed to keep him and FF in permanent power but sceptre and crown have now come tumbling down, he should be heading for the Joy.

He will always be associated with the corruption and blank check excesses of the celtic credit tiger. His legacy would have reflected on the Eu commission and discredited that institution. Pity it was only talk.

How come his seat is one of the 8 bankers FF have in the next election, why wont he just FF -OFF? They even rate Biffo as a cert!!! surely Offaly people can't be that daft, can they?

    Sindo's 8 FF safe seats

    Bertie Ahern Dublin Central
    Brian Lenihan Dublin West
    Eamon O'Cuiv Galway West
    Brian Cowen Laois-Offaly
    Dermot Ahern Louth
    Mary Coughlan Donegal South West
    Willie O'Dea Limerick East
    Seamus Kirk* Louth
Kirk being Ceann Comhairle will be automatically re-elected, why?, allowing Dermot Ahern to retain.
So really only one safe seat for FF, Seamus Kirk!

Surely some of these voters must see beyond their noses and realise that these are the same idiots they have elected for years and they have watched their money and country go down the pan!
