Default Fine Gael back down on pairing

FINE GAEL has backed down from an initial declaration that it would refuse Taoiseach Brian Cowen a Dáil pairing arrangement to attend the eighth Asia-Europe summit meeting in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday next.
Fine Gael backs down on Cowen pairing for EU-Asia talks - The Irish Times - Tue, Sep 28, 2010

Apparently Fine Gael only realised how important a meeting was after queries from RTE and the Irish Times. After initially pointing out how easy it would be for Cowen to return to the Dail - they have now said they will allow the pairing for the EU-Asia summit.

However the Fine Gael spokesman contacted this newspaper, after the front page had been shown on television late last night and he had received a query about the matter from RTÉ, to say that he had not understood the meeting was of such high status and a pair would not be refused after all.
Last Friday it was disclosed on Politics.ie that Fine Gael would be withdrawing from pairing arrangements with the Government for the forthcoming Dail term. Today Labour stepped in (after being approached by the Tanaiste Mary Coughlan) to pair with the Minister for Education to allow a journey to the US to promote international students coming to Ireland.

Late in the day, Fine Gael attempting to explain themelves by pointing out their withdrawal of pairing arrangements would still allow Mary Coughlan to travel to the US after Wednesday. In a statement entitled "Enterprise Ireland schedule confirms Coughlan could attend Dáil AND Conference" Fine Gael’s Education Spokesman, Fergus O’Dowd TD said the Tanaiste could comfortably attend the Dail and the conference saying that the conference attended by Enterprise Ireland were being held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. FG's statement suggested after a day of business in the Dail, the Tanaiste could travel to the US to be there for conferences on Thursday.

Those all-expenses-paid junkets to the Vatican have their uses after all.

Look its clear Enda Kenny is all over the place on this issue.

Once again he demonstrates dangerous rash judgement.

The issues of pairings are crucial to the effective governing of the country.

All governments of any political hue are entitled to these arrangements to ensure the good of everybody in a democracy.

Enda Kennys clear contempt for and confusion surrounding these elementary political matters is astounding.

Once again Enda Kenny puts personal ambition above the good of the country and demonstrates his utter unfitness to be leader of any political party let alone Taoiseach of the country.

The only thing worse then the government is the opposition, etc.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

is bruton, varadkar hayes etc in on this or is it just the old fogeys i.e enda kenny, phil hogan etc
seems to me as if they are in a right shambles, varadkar was right when he said he would not trust enda kenny as taoiseach it seem he cant let him out of his sight just as leader of the opposition,

Enda is a farce at this stage. FG don't seem to think things through at all. It seems they're all in such a rush to issue a press release about their latest brain fart that they lose all ability to see the long term consequences. This is something they have accused the government of before, yet Enda has displayed it time and time again. Their nonsense bank plan, Enda having no idea of FG's water policy, the seanad abolition nonsense and now this... among others.

You need to cop yourself on.
460,000 unemployed, 70,000 graduates unemployed, 70,000 annual emigration, Anglo, NAMA, Deficit €20,000,000,000, Real national Debt 160 Billion Euro. Get into the real Ireland. Wonder you don't blame Kenny for all this as well.
