Default Are Dublin Gardai Stations using Avis / Hertz Cars as Squad Cars?

Came accross this nugget of information last week after speaking with someone involed in the ordering of these cars. One of the biggest cut backs on the Gardai is on new Squad cars and I'm told that a number of Garda Stations in Dublin are using Hire cars now when needed and in some cases their own personal transport

With Gardai Squad cars been made redundant at 120,000 miles many Gardai stations have not replaced old squad cars and stations accross Ireland have seen the number of squad cars down by one third.

Things are getting bad. I've heard that the Garda Surf Unit may be facing cuts.

The station down here has 4 vehicles ,all of them rough.
    They've an 06 Ford Galaxy that hasn't a straight panel on it,an equally rough 07 Mondeo , A hathback corolla and a transit .
Haven't seen any cop cars newer than 07 around but the army have lots of new stuff

A lot of the new and best cars were taken for the Traffic Corp.

Its not necessarily a bad plan to use rented cars on occasion. Rental cars are generally quite cheap at the moment.

Wasn't there a report some years ago that the guards in Dublin were using the dearest filling station at the time , on the quays , to get their fuel supplies ?
