BBC News - EU mobile phone charge cap is legal
The good news is that the 4 EU big networks failed in their legal bid to be allowed to over charge customers who roam in another EU state. Maximum roaming charge will drop to 35 cent next year.
This currently means that it is sometimes cheaper to roam in Ireland on a foreign mobile, than use an Irish mobile. Meteor charges pay-as-you-go customers 50c/minute to call the UK, but a UK mobile roaming on Meteor here gets charged 43c/minute. This will soon drop to 39c/min and to 35c/min next summer.
Data rates are still the big rip off. 1 cent/kb is the standard rate, which is clearly insanely expensive. The EU plans a cap of 1 euro / mb, which is ten times cheaper, but still very expensive.
