Default Roam caps legal, but now cheaper to roam than stay home

BBC News - EU mobile phone charge cap is legal

The good news is that the 4 EU big networks failed in their legal bid to be allowed to over charge customers who roam in another EU state. Maximum roaming charge will drop to 35 cent next year.

This currently means that it is sometimes cheaper to roam in Ireland on a foreign mobile, than use an Irish mobile. Meteor charges pay-as-you-go customers 50c/minute to call the UK, but a UK mobile roaming on Meteor here gets charged 43c/minute. This will soon drop to 39c/min and to 35c/min next summer.

Data rates are still the big rip off. 1 cent/kb is the standard rate, which is clearly insanely expensive. The EU plans a cap of 1 euro / mb, which is ten times cheaper, but still very expensive.

Hope the Irish regulator sees sense and lower the call charges.

Just got a sms of price increases from Meteor. From 28th August each sms to an Irish number will cost 13c when in Ireland. Sms to a non Irish number is about 25c I think. Of course, when I am abroad, the EU mandates the maximum they can charge for an sms is 11c to any EU mobile.

EU Parliament votes to end roaming, protect

The EU parliament has voted to scrap roaming altogether by 2016. Good news.

On my travels Meteor texted me: "Calls cost 23c per min to Ireland & EU and 6c to receive. Texts cost 7c and MMS 25c. Data usage is 25c per MB. Emergency Services call 112"

But since April 30 2016 the roaming cap on receiving calls is 1 cent and other prices are capped at the usual price plus 5 cent.

    Are Meteor breaking the law?
